Before you bring your furry friend home, it’s important to check if you are allowed to keep a pet in your strata building. NSW has sets of standard by-laws for the various types of strata schemes, called Model by-laws.

Each strata scheme has its own set of by-laws. By-laws cover the behavior of residents and the use of common property. No by-law should prevent someone using a trained and certified assistance animal.

Remember that if your strata scheme by-laws do allow pets, you will still need to supervise your pet, tidy up after your pet, clean any common property that is soiled and ensure make sure your pet is supervised and not negatively impacting other residents.

Even if a strata scheme allows pets, a tenant always needs their landlord’s permission first.
